Indian flagDrupalCon is an important community event that brings a diverse group of Drupalers together under one roof to share knowledge, grow skills, and strengthen community bonds. As an organization, it is very rewarding to facilitate these experiences around the world.

In the past, our attendance data has shown that DrupalCon is primarily a regional event, attracting attendees from nearby countries and drawing in some great international speakers, trainers, and community leaders. Knowing this, the Drupal Association is committed to hosting DrupalCon in regions other than just North America and Europe.

In 2015, this third DrupalCon is in Bogota, Colombia. In 2016, we want to host DrupalCon in India and this blog explains why. Can you tell us your thoughts on this host country and which city you think should be the next DrupalCon location?

How do you pick locations?

The Drupal Association Board sets the staff’s direction with vision and strategy and they asked staff to come up with a list of possible countries in regions outside of North America and Europe that are viable DrupalCon Locations. They provided us with selection criteria that supported their strategy, which included in no particular order:

  • Popularity - People want to visit the host location to site see.
  • Strong local community: Size of the camp in the proposed city / # of camps in a country
  • Size of Drupal business community - # of Drupal businesses within that country and region
  • Ease of doing business with a country: Easy to set up a financial entity so we can collect ticket sales revenue and pay vendors in local currency.
  • Local Support: The community reached out to the Association, requesting a DrupalCon and offering to help produce it.
  • Inexpensive travel  - This gives insight into the average cost of lodging in the city
  • Visa: Easy to get a visa or one is not required to enter a country.
  • Strong business environment - The number of Fortune 500 companies in that region
  • Community survey: Where does the community want to go?

After researching locations and ranking countries and cities based on the above criteria, several places bubbled to the top. Latin America and specifically Bogota, Colombia was a clear leader, which is why we are hosting DrupalCon 2015 there. India was ranked second over other possible locations.

What makes India a good host country?

DrupalCamp Deccan 2011India has an impressive number of Drupal leaders, contributors, businesses, and end users. This country drives the 2nd highest amount of traffic to Drupal.org (Unites States had 1M sessions last month, while India had 450,000.) DrupalCon in India can highlight this country’s Drupal strength to the global community while conversely showing the local community how they can contribute more back to the Project.

More specifically, India ranked high because it has several mature camps and many local communities throughout the country. Producing DrupalCon outside of North America and Europe requires a strong partnership with community leaders who can help us with logistics. Plus, a DrupalCon needs power in numbers to make it financially worthwhile and effective, so a large community base is key.

In India, technology conference tickets are usually very inexpensive, so a DrupalCon in India ticket price will need to cost much less than the standard DrupalCon ticket price. Because of the cost of putting on conferences, having low ticket prices means the event will be funded through sponsorships. India has a strong Drupal business community and many are already pledging sponsorship to make the event financially viable.

Which host city is best for you?

We would like to thank Rahul Dewan, Jacob Singh, Mayank Chadha, Rachit Gupta, Ani Gupta, Hussain Abbas, Chakrapani R, Sunit Gala, Venky Goteti, and Shyamala Rajaram and other community leaders for determining the financial feasibility for hosting a 1,000 person DrupalCon in their city. After several discussions, we decided Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi are our three most viable host cities. Now we need your input in picking the city where we will host our first DrupalCon in India. Below is a chart summarizing their key findings.

Which city should host DrupalCon and why did you chose that city? (e.g. travel distance, travel cost, ideal hotel cost, preferred venue(s), community size). Please use comments to tell us.

Yay!! DrupalCon is coming to our region. Please choose Dehli. I can take a bus from Lahore, Pakistan to Dehli.

Yay!

There is a Drupal camp Delhi in Jan (10th and 11th), see if you can visit. It'll be so awesome to have participation from Pakistan not just in Drupalcon but in camps and do let us know of your camps.

Awesome.

Please do join us for Drupal Camp Delhi!

Hi Jibran,

Thanks for letting me know. It's great to hear that you would travel from Pakistan to this event.

Stay tuned!

This is great news. Over the past, DrupalCon have only been organized in Europe or American regions which is obviously quite far from the capacity of many people from this region financially. Now that its coming to India, I would love to join the event. As far as I can think, the best place for someone from Pakistan should be Delhi.

Also, can someone please inform about the ticket price of DrupalCon? Or is that not yet decided? Also, what are the main requirements to get a grant or scholarship? Thanks in advance

Hi Community,

Please use comments to tell us:

- Which city are you most likely to travel to and why?

- Which city is the best one to attract Drupalers from all over India and why?

- What is the hotel nightly rate that you are willing to pay if you have to travel to DrupalCon?

- Anything else!

Thanks,

Reaching Delhi is more convenient as there are direct flights for Delhi even from small cities, also metro acts as a catalyst for the nearby cities like Noida and Gurgaon.

In Delhi we have Drupal camps being successfully organised every year and lot of people from different cities as well actively particpated in the event making it a good choice.

Regarding the hotel nigtly rate, I guess the fare to be around Rs. 1500 to 2500/night should be fine.

ifrik’s picture

How will you organise that people will get conference visa for India?

megansanicki’s picture

Hi ifrik,

That's a great question. This is a detail we need to work out for sure. I'll do some research into that.

Best,

Megan

Hi @megansanicki,

Since Mumbai being the commercial hub, turn outs will be large. The community response in Drupal Mumbai Camps has also been enormous.

I wouldn't mind travelling to any other metropolis to attend the DrupalCon India.

Mumbai Hotel nightly could be anywhere starting 1500/- per night to 5000/- and more near airport .

Yay DrupalCon 2016 is in INDIA!

Mumbai would be so cool for the DrupalCon India. I'm pretty much sure that travelling, staying and food all will be super cool and comfortable here. There are many alternatives for the basic need of food and shelter as nashkrammer has mentioned above.

I would also like to add that TRAVELLING in Mumbai is also providing you many alternates. You can opt a pre-hired cab from http://merucabs.com/ or similar; else you can also hire the local cabs or rickshaw which is really affordable. If you want to travel by public transport then you can surely go with the BEST buses, local trains (this wouldn’t be preferred but you can consider this as a choice) and especially Mumbai METRO’s.

Apart from that currently there are many web development organizations which are looking for such event especially from Mumbai, here is a small scenario of the DrupalCamp which was recently help in Thane (near Mumbai) organized by TCS, Axelerant and others (http://drupalcampmumbai.org/). Where Jeffrey A. “jam” McGuire has provided us the keynote which was very helpful, indeed this event was on Google Hangout also.

Probably, we can still contact many of the organizations for the same and I’m pretty much sure everyone will love the climate of Mumbai because it’s very pleasant and stays normal for the whole year.

Regards.

Yes, I agree with you totally, it’s very good to see that DrupalCon 2016 is in INDIA but it’s great if the Con is going to happen in Aamchi Mumbai!

Staying is Mumbai is not as difficult as other cities, you’ll get many options here. Travelling, food and all other basic needs are also just perfect.

It’s going to be really fun and informative as we’re going to get a vast knowledge and knee techniques of excellent development for which Drupal is famous, guys I’m with Mumbai.

Best Regards.

Drupal Strength :
As per your chat summarizing mumbai have large number of active drupal developers

megansanicki’s picture

Hi @megansanicki,

I leave in mumbai but i have stayed in south india for 4 years. I would definitly choose mumbai over delhi and banglore because of following reasons,

  1. Weather :

Mumbai : Climate in mumbai is very pleasent across all the seasons.  +1

   http://wikitravel.org/en/Mumbai#Climate

Delhi : Client extremly varies in summer and winter  -1

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Delhi

  2. Transport

Mumbai : is a central hub of India, It is near to pune, banglore, chennai, hyderabad, delhi ( Major tech cities of india ). Even Traveling inside mumbai is cheaper than any other cities, It have Good network on Local Train, Metro train, mono rails and local Buse transport +1

Delhi : Travelling is expensive as per the survey report presented by you. -1

I would prefer Mumbai but i can travel to any city in India to attend DrupalCon :)

Thanks a lot for selecting India for DrupalCon 2016, Excited to attend DrupalCon.

mayurjadhav’s picture

Mumbai will be the best location for DrupalCon.

bappa.sarkar’s picture

I spend 5 years in Delhi and 2 years in Mumbai as a Drupal developer. But frankly speaking I found passion in organizing Drupal event only in Mumbai. Not only drupalers  are interested in community work but their companies also encourage their employees to participate. This is very unique in Mumbai. I am trying my best to answer your questions

- Which city are you most likely to travel to and why?

Ans: If you devide India in horizontaly, you see Northern India and Suth India. Mumbai will be on the horizontal line so close to any part of India. But Delhi is in far north.

- Which city is the best one to attract Drupalers from all over India and why?

Ofcourse Mumbai. please see http://goo.gl/wTxYyU

- What is the hotel nightly rate that you are willing to pay if you have to travel to DrupalCon?

I will pay arround ₹1000 to ₹2000. And there are hell lot of I can see right now in goibibo.com

- Anything else!

Any session or conferrence's succes depends on the host, their interest and their passion. And I dont have any doubt in Mumbai and Mumbaikers. I felt it in my last Drupal camp Mumbai.

Thanks,

Bappa

gargsuchi’s picture

Delhi. And I am not saying this because I am from Delhi.

Some reasons:

  • The Drupal community is Delhi is really strong. The annual DCD (Drupal Camp Delhi) has been quite consistent in getting 350+ people to gather from all over the country. And we are expecting ~500 people this January (http://2015.drupalcampdelhi.com/)
  • Delhi can be quite an inexpensive option, we might need to look at more options for the hostin of the event.
  • There are lots of "touristy" places for travellers in and around Delhi (Taj Mahal is just about 200 kms away - and is certainly the top most tourist destination for many of the international travellers)
  • The food scene in Delhi is legendary.
  • Being the capital of the country, the city is quite accessible for national as well as international travellers.
gargsuchi’s picture

Oh - and forgot - The Delhi Metro is on of the best options for travel within the city.

megansanicki’s picture

Thanks gargsuchi,

I appreciate the well articulated point. If DrupalCon were in Mumbai or Bangalore, would you go? Can you tell me why or why not for each city? (And I won't hold you to it. I am just gauging interest).

Thanks,

Megan

gargsuchi’s picture

Yup - will go to Drupalcon even if it is in Mumbai or B'lore.

pavithra.raman’s picture

Delhi or Mumbai:

  1. Good national and internation connectivity. Via Road, Rail and Air. if its Mumbai, maybe you could try landign via a Cruise too, so Water gets added to the list.
  2. Local transport, lodging options are easy to get. Depending on your budget, you can get boarding and transportation very easily.
  3. Huge communities in Delhi and Mumbai. Big events. And... Lot of corporates in these 2 places, with their Drupal, non-Drupal, Sales and support teams.
  4. Some of the famous and biggest universities and technical institutions like IIT-M and IIT-D. FOSS groups in these institutions are very active and usually pool in to get us volunteers for the Camps.
  5. Mumbai, Pune, Vadodara, Ahemdabad - good IT hubs. Same with Delhi/Noida/Gugaon, Lucknow, Jaipur.
  6. Places to travel: Delhi - lot of historic and national importance, Agra, Lucknow, Jaipur nearby. Mumbai - Well Mumbai is itself enough, huge party scene, the city that never sleeps, one of the safest places in the country. Marine Drive, Colaba wow. And GOA is nearby. So is the entire Konkan beach strech and the Western Ghats.
  7. Food: Well, I shall test Delhi out for that in December. Mumbai -- From exotic international cuisines to local Mumbai street food, from the luscious dinner at the Taj to well the Chaat wala at Juhu beach. The variety is enormous.
  8. Oh.. And last. Not had any communication issues with locals at these places. Even friendly to foreigners.
perennial.sky’s picture

1. I would prefer Delhi amongst other locations suggested - mainly because of easy traveling, good connectivity with North India which is also good for tourism (Taj Mahal being the highlight). Delhi and Mumbai both have many drupalers. but Delhi is a bigger IT hub and we can easily get more volunteers.
2. I think hotels in the range Rs. 2000 to Rs. 5000 will be decent.

Hi akashjain132,

I appreciate the feedback. Are you from Delhi?

Also if the event were in Bangalore or Mumbai, would you attend? Why or why not? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

perennial.sky’s picture

Hi Megan,

I'm from Jaipur which is close to Delhi.

Definitely I will attend the event even if it is in Bangalore or Mumbai. I was not recommending Delhi because I am close to it but because Delhi is a more comfortable place for the large chunk of Indian audience.

- Delhi has very good connectivity and it is cheaper than Mumbai for most of the daily activities.
- Delhi is becoming IT Hub of India with more and more technology being adopted in the NCR region.
- Delhi also has the most number of Drupalers (could be verified by the attendees of Drupal Camps)
- Delhi is also the best when it comes to food :)

drupaledmonk’s picture

Can you change Bangalore to Bengaluru.

There are few wrong numbers in terms of duration

Hyderabad to Mumbai by train on average takes 15hrs and not 10 hrs as mentioned.

I would prefer Bengaluru. There was a camp organized in Hyderabad to which Dries attended in 2011, which was organized by people from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai as well. Also Bengaluru is closer to Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi which have a good number of Drupalers.

My second preference would be Mumbai.

megansanicki’s picture

Hi drupaledmonk,

I appreciate the corrections and will talk to the team about making them.

Which city do you live in or closest to? I'm curious given your preference.

Thanks,

I prefere Delhi, as a city is always buzzing with life. You can never get bored in the capital as there’s always something or the other happening in town. It offers a great platform for performances, gigs, plays, recitals, exhibitions, and talks etc. Delhi is the best place to organise this event.

• Delhi is the biggest hub of Drupalers & Open Source lovers accross the country.
• Easy to travell from anywhere in India.
• Near to neighbour countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and China.
• In terms of Costs and Tourist places, Delhi and Mumbai both are quit similar.

  • The Drupal community is Mumbai is really awesome. The annual DCM (Drupal Camp Mumbai) has been quite consistent in involving more than 350 folks . And we are expecting 500 people this Feb-2015
  • Mumbai considered to be economic hub for India and Mumbai have maximum numbers of fortune 500 company .there is really good connectivity with other cities of India (Banglore,Pune,Delhi) minimum daily 4 to 5 flights available.
  • Its safe
  • Maximum all top companies headquarters are located in MUMBAI
  • Being Economic HUB of country accessibility of every thing will be very easy

Delhi being the national capital is my first choice. Delhi itself has numerious companies and have 2 big IT hubs, Gurgaon and Noida, with great connectivity via Delhi Metro, Buses and Expressways.

  • Noida and Gurgaon are 2 satellite cities to Delhi, comes in NCR, and have offices of big IT companies like Adobe, Google, Microsoft, Dell, Yahoo, Cisco, Accenture, IBM and many more... Apart from this, these cities also hold Special Economic Zones for SME's which can be a big market for Drupal.
  • Connectivity to Delhi nationally and internationally is very well, via Air, rail and road. Even for the satellite towns, the Local delhi metro, which is byfar the cheapest option to travel, does a great job.
  • Delhi, NCR is also home to some of the most expensive as well as cheapest budget hotels, with range starting from as low as 500Rs (~9 USD) per bed per day. It is one of the cheapest capitals of the world to live in.
  • Laslty, Delhi hosted Commonwealth games in 2010 (http://d2010.thecgf.com/, interestingly build on Drupal too), which no other city in India has, and things have gone better since.
  • Drupal community in Delhi has grown bigger, with over 350 people attending the event since last 3 years and expected to reach 500 this year. Community here is byfar also the most diverse where we see participation from companies not only from Delhi, but outside too.

My vote for Bangalore !!!

pradyumnahpt’s picture

My Vote is for Bangalore,

  1. This has the most cosmpolitan tech human resource in the country. Bangalore is a unique place where you can find huge tech crowd and also tech crowd from various regions like Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi/Northern part of the country residing in Bangalore. The place really suits Drupal's idea of "Fostering inclusivity and diversity".
  2. Good road/rail/air Connectivity from other IT hubs like Chennai, Hyderabad,Kochi and Mumbai.Lesser Travel time from these is more favourable to Bangalore.
  3. The region is more tech savvy beacuse of implementation of E governance scemes through a dedicated website by the local government like sakala ( http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/Sakala-bags-e-governan... ) and also the launch of Mobile app M-one, offerring government services ( http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/karnataka-app-m-on... ) to people. Drupal Can play a greater role in helping  build these scemes to the local government.

Good to see this discussion. My preference below :

City : Mumbai

Attraction to developers :  I think Wherever the DrupalCon is in India, should not be hard for any drupler to come an join.

Nightly Rate : 1500 - 2000.

I have been watching this space for some time and I am amazed by the fact that nobody has mentioned IHC as a possible venue:

India Habitat Centre (IHC), Lodhi Road, New Delhi:

It is centrally located with required space for 1000+ people in it's 7+ halls for 50-200 people and one large hall for keynotes for 450+ people. Besides these there are good sized outside areas for exhibitions, catering etc.

Catering comes at a cost of just Rs.1000 ($17) / person/day for events booked through members and Rs. 2000 ($34) / person/ day for events booked by non-members. I have access to IHC members and thus it would be easy.

Accomodation around this place in 3* hotel options (~5km) from the venue - Rs 2,500-4,000 ($41-$66).

Travel: From Bombay
Plane (2hr00): Rs 7,730 ($125)
Train Rs 2,475 ($40)

From Bangalore
Plane (2hr30): Rs 9,275 ($150)

From Hyderabad
Plane (2hr00): Rs 10,820 ($175)

I have personally executed 5+ conferences in India Habitat Centre at member rates for 50-400 audience.

As per the catering and hotel room cost , it seems that bangalore is less expensive.
Bangalore is IT hub , more IT companies are there with respects to Delhi and Mumbai.
So in my suggestion Bangalore is the best place.

Jalandhar’s picture

I feel Bangalore is the best place.

If we consider the catering and hotel room cost then bangalore is less expensive. It will be easy to travel for every one coming from different places.

Also, Bangalore is the place which is popularly known as the Silicon Valley of India and IT Capital of India.

And transportation is very good in Mumbai.

delhi is great too, only issue is safety for women

these are my thoughts.

Disclaimer : I am from Mumbai and willing to travel to Delhi for DrupalCon :-)

I think there are lot of good venues available at both Mumbai & Delhi.

  1. Yes Mumbai is closer to most Drupal hub in country
  2. Yes it has larger connectivity by rail for public transport

But these are not the reasons why I am suggesting Mumbai.

As Drupal fans, those would hardly matter to many(not all) and most go beyond reasons to make it to the venue.

I honestly don't have numbers to support though and I have that is the majority, if not, that needs to taken in consideration as well.

According to me, what is different, is in Feb, it is still quite cold in Delhi (which I enjoy) and it is quite foggy, while Mumbai is warm and has clear weather.

This may have impact on air traffic, as it invariably does every year .

That makes Mumbai, slightly more attractive than Delhi at that time of the year.

+1 for Mumbai !

Mumbai has all the potential that required to have successful DrupalCon 2016.

A little biased (owing to being Bangalorean) - but Bangalore would be a good pick.

  1.  Mentionable F/OSS community presence (incl Drupal) and has hosted the most premier events in this space (FOSS.in et al);
  2. Strong presence of Drupal Businesses (both enterprise as well as an abundance of startups);
  3. Multitude of options for accomodation / food - at all budgets.
  4. Multitude of travel/tourism options in proximity (Mysore, Hampi, Goa et al);
  5. Great weather is a big plus.

Here is why Mumbai makes more sense.

- it's one of the main hub for opensource community, especially Drupal

- there are big and small drupal shops in and around mumbai and traveling to another city would be an issue for them.

- city has plenty of options from budget to luxury travellers

- DrupalCamps have been popular

- overall big +1

Yo! I m a newbee here. I want to collect as much fun as I can. And I see a lot of rookies around here and all over INDIA.

We all DrupaLovers want to see this happen here in MUMBAI. Mumbai is connected to each & every NODE in INDIA. Road, rail, airways all are available.

So this does make sense to make it happen here in MUMBAI.

GO 4 IT!

Mumbai seems to be a good choice as travelling to mumbai seems viable for all. Pune city is also near by which is just 4 hours away via road. Consider other locations  like Jaipur, Bengaluru, Gujrat, Chennai seems closer for Mumbai rather Delhi and other travelling options possible not just airlines. Plus the community of Mumbai rocks we might expect 500+ members easily for the Drupalcamp from mumbai itself. The hotels availability is also good at a cost of 1500- 6000 oer day, there are tons of good hotels available near to the recommended ones. Mumbai city never sleeps at night and safe too. We have lot of emerging talent from here and events like this will boom the growth rate.

cmak’s picture

First of all, Mumbai is accessible from North as well as South. As it lies in the Middle West of the country, Delhi and Bangalore both as accessbile via Air and Road ways. Also Pune is almost 4 hours via Road ways. Mumbai has variety of Hotels as per budget. Mumbai is financial capital of India and not only the home to bollywood industry but also various other industries

Also last Mumbai DrupalCamp had 500+ attendees and there are almost 2000+ members active among various online sites. Mumbai had over 40 meetups, trainings and codesprints alone in the last 3 years. So it should surely win the honour to host the First DrupaCon 2016 in India.

rachit_gupta’s picture

Comparing all three cities, i believe Mumbai would be the best venue because of following

1. Being the central place between other Major Drupal hubs, it's convenient to travel from Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi , while the same would not be convenient for everyone,if we choose Delhi or Bangalore both being the extremes. one can travel with Bus, Train , Flight being an expensive option everyone would not go for it. Also, Mumbai along with Pune forms the biggest and most active Drupal community in India.

2. Mumbai is closer to Pune, which is also one of the biggest tech hub in india - reference from Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology_in_India) - The major cities that account for about nearly 90% of the sector's exports are Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai , Trivandrum, Noida, Mumbai and Pune.

3. Mumbai is the place most of the people would like to see because of it's unparalled attractions - Which includes city History, Bollywood. Amazing Street Food. One can easily see the whole city in a Day. Metro (http://www.mumbai-metro.com/)and Monorail (https://mmrda.maharashtra.gov.in/mumbai-monorail-project) are also now operatonal making it easy to travel within the city.

4. One can easily get an affordable accomodations ranging  between 1000 - 5000 INR, there are varietly of options available on Hotels.com, Airbnb etc.

5. Mumbai being the business capital is the hub of all Major companies including Major indian IT companies, since Drupal is now being largely adopted in Major indian IT comapnies, Having DrupalCon would attract major business attention from these IT organizations.

6. Other factors to consider is Weather and Safety.Winters are brutal in Delhi, specially Dec, Jan and Feb, on the other hand in Mumbai and Bangalore, one would enjoy a lively weather. It's safe to travel in Mumbai and Bangalore, while Delhi has concerns.

monika.meshram’s picture

A great news. DrupalCon in India...And what better place than Mumbai.  My vote as Mumbai because of the following reasons:

1) Ease of accessibility. Can be reached from any part of India and essentially from the major tech-hubs other than Mumbai i.e; Pune and Hyderabad easily. Mumbai has a closer proximity to these citites in comparision to Delhi and Bangalore.

2) Mumbai being the financial capital, and the hub of most major IT companies, it would be a great place to attract people from these companies as well as budding entrpreneuers who want to use Drupal intheir projects.

3)The safest of the three cities

4) Additional attraction as many famous tourist spots are present.

Hoping its DrupalCon-Mumbai 2016 !!!

Hi megansanicki,

I would love DrupalCon to be organised in Delhi :

- Firstly, I live in Delhi ;)

- Any Drupal event organised in Delhi attracts hundreds and thousands of drupalers from all over India,

- Everyone is aware of the fact that Drupal Camp Delhi had an attendance of nearly 500 people every year, for the past three or four years,

- There is a spirit of togetherness, and oneness here in Delhi :),

- Public transport is quite cheap, of course until you hire a Limo. Travel rates are very low for buses, and Delhi metro. You can even hire radio taxis that are just a phone call away,

- Weather is pleasant, not really throughout the year but extreme odds are December for winters and June for summers. And even at this time of the year, we have public transport like metro, and AC buses to keep you cool in summers and warm in winters,

- Connectivity to far ends of the city is available, say Delhi NCR (Gurgaon and Noida) which house a huge strength of upcoming drupal talent.

Rest is destiny :)

Very excited to attend DrupalCon YaY !

Shamsher_Alam’s picture

I would prefer Delhi is best place for  Cental HUB for DrupalCon..

hpn’s picture

One would tend to prefer the city they reside in, but I think it is better if the city where this will be hosted should be decided based on the factors like when (on which date) the event is planned. For instance, having one such event in Delhi during winter may really not be a good idea as the fog and delayed flights may affect drastically. Likewise, Mumbai during the monsoon may not be a really good idea.

As for Bengaluru, there are plenty of options for venues. Hotel Moevenpick, Mariott could also be options. For more simpler venues that work better, there's NIAS (where we had organized a huge Wikipedia 10 event) or JRD Tata Auditorium at IISc, Bengaluru (where FOSS.in was organized several times).

I vote for delhi, as Delhi has a consistent drupal community, and here you will be able to find the people who are passionate about drupal.

Finally Con is coming to India!
Would prefer Mumbai.

Hemangi Gokhale’s picture

Hi Megan Sanicki,

Glad to see that DrupalCon 2015 is coming to India, I would suggested Mumbai, since its a great and beautiful place, easier in communication.

I'm pretty much sure that travelling, staying and food; all will be super cool and comfortable here. There are many alternatives for the basic need of food and shelter in Mumbai, you'll get a number of good hotels for the stay and very better restaurants for food.

I would also like to add that TRAVELLING in Mumbai is also providing you many alternates. You can opt a pre-hired cab fleet taxis from the airports; else you can also hire the local cabs or rickshaw which is in other way an affordable choice. If you want to travel by public transport then you can surely go with the BEST buses, local trains (this wouldn't be preferred but you can consider this as a choice) and especially Mumbai METRO's.

Apart from that currently there are many IT organizations which are looking for such event especially from Mumbai, here is a small scenario of the DrupalCamp which was recently help in Thane (near Mumbai) organized by TCS, Axelerant and others (http://drupalcampmumbai.org/). Where Jeffrey A. “jam” McGuire has provided us the keynote which was very helpful, indeed this event was on Google Hangout also.

Probably, we can still contact many of the organizations for the same and I'm pretty much sure everyone will love the climate of Mumbai because it's very pleasant and stays normal for the whole year.

Another city which is also indulge in IT development called Pune is very near to Mumbai, approx. (2 Hrs. by Road). Pune is one of the IT hub from India very similar to Mumbai and Bangalore. We can expect many of the people from there too.

Transportation
Mumbai has the best local transport like the local trains and the buses which are frequent and though it is always crowded the people in Mumbai are very loyal and easy going.

Taxis
Mumbai seems to have more taxis than any other vehicle. Bangalore & Delhi on the other hand has tons of autos and only has the call taxis, and not like the taxis in Mumbai.

Auto
Mumbai autos were fine, in that they at least went by the meter, unlike Bangalore where the meter is just a fashion accessory!

Infrastructure
The roads were in a much better condition to a large extent and though there were bad patches and potholes the ratio of good roads to bad roads was much better in Mumbai than in Bangalore & Delhi. Also the roads were much wider than in Bangalore.  Both the cities have equally bad traffic jams during the peak hours.

Culture
With ultra-cool and high on style quotient Mumbai is surely the fashion capital of country. It has the touch of cosmopolitan men and women.

Nightlife
The most happening place when it comes to nightlife is Mumbai. In, Mumbai you can party all night whereas in Bangalore the party ends at 11:30pm. Bangaloreans have learnt to adapt to this time restriction and start their night life early.

Delhi can't be in the same league, taking into account its crime graph, bureaucratic lifestyle, glaring inequalities, pollution etc.

Regards,

Hemangi Gokhale

Hi Megan,

I hail from the Professional Conference Organisers industry. This kind of event will for sure be best held in Mumbai.

A - the audience: most receptive and proactive would be found here.

B- You would have easy access to a range of hotel options, and most importantly, approach and access to a location would be far easier as compared to the other 2 locations suggested.

C- Besides, for factors beyond the hospitality bit - ease of sponsorship generation, quality vendors, etc, Mumbai rules the roost.

D- If IIT is one of the host venues, there are close to a 1000 rooms across budgets in the vicinity of 5 km radius - which am sure will suffice the conference requirement.

Cheers,

Kapil
